- Team members should never pre-draw up any syringes (i.e., batch them for use for the day). These should be drawn up upon receipt of the provider’s order for the patient receiving it at the time of the order.
- Multidose vials should be used as a single use medication and discarded after use, except in limited situations (i.e., Flu Vaccine doses in a multidose vial and single dose not available).
- Basic Standard Precautions should be followed with all injection preparations, handling and administration (i.e., hand hygiene before and after, disinfection of the work space, never carry medication syringes in pockets). Medications should be drawn up in a designated clean medication area and labeled immediately before each individual patient.
- One Needle, One Syringe, One Time for injections-when preparing and mixing injections, the diaphragm should be cleaned (it is not sterile even if the plastic cover was just removed) with alcohol and any needle used should be for one time only and discarded. New needles should be attached if using the same syringe to obtain another medication. Syringes should be used for one patient and only once and then discarded.
